Larry will tell Bethany, “Jaden doesn’t want you to go to Montana. I’m going there alone. You shouldn’t insist.

Larry: Bethany, sit down for a minute. We need to talk.
Bethany: If this is about Montana again, I already told you—I’m going.
Larry: That’s exactly what it’s about. And before you say anything else, you need to hear this. Jaden doesn’t want you to go to Montana.
Bethany: …What? Since when does Jaden get to decide where I go?
Larry: I’m not saying he decides. I’m telling you what he told me. He’s worried, Bethany. He thinks it’s a bad idea.
Bethany: Worried about what? The drive? The weather? Or is this just another excuse?
Larry: He thinks it’ll complicate things. Between you and him. Between all of us.
Bethany: Funny. He didn’t say any of that to my face.
Larry: Because he didn’t want to hurt you. He knows how set you are on this.
Bethany: And what about you, Larry? What do you want?
Larry: I’m going to Montana alone.
Bethany: Alone?
Larry: Yes. I’ve already decided.
Bethany: You decided without even talking to me?
Larry: I’m talking to you now. And I’m telling you—you shouldn’t insist on coming.
Bethany: That’s not your call.
Larry: It kind of is, Bethany. This trip started as my responsibility.
Bethany: No, this trip started because we talked about it. Together. You don’t get to rewrite that.
Larry: Things changed.
Bethany: Because Jaden got uncomfortable?
Larry: Because this isn’t just about what you want anymore.
Bethany: I’m so tired of hearing that. Every time I want to do something hard or unfamiliar, someone decides it’s “not the right time.”
Larry: This isn’t about control.
Bethany: It always is. You just use different words.
Larry: Look, Montana isn’t some weekend getaway. It’s complicated, it’s emotional, and it could open doors that don’t need to be opened.
Bethany: Or it could give me answers I’ve been waiting for.
Larry: Answers come with consequences.
Bethany: So does staying behind and wondering “what if.”
Larry: Jaden is already on edge.
Bethany: Then maybe Jaden should talk to me instead of sending you as a messenger.
Larry: He didn’t send me. I’m choosing to tell you because I agree with him.
Bethany: That hurts more than you think.
Larry: I’m not trying to hurt you. I’m trying to protect everyone.
Bethany: Including yourself?
Larry: Maybe. I won’t pretend I’m neutral here.
Bethany: At least that’s honest.
Larry: Bethany… please. Let me go alone. Let this be my burden to carry.
Bethany: And what am I supposed to do? Stay here and wait?
Larry: No. Live. Just—don’t push this.
Bethany: I don’t know if I can promise that.
Larry: I hoped you’d say something else.
Bethany: I hoped you wouldn’t shut me out.
Larry: Sometimes distance is the only way to keep things from breaking.
Bethany: Or it’s how they break quietly.
(A long pause.)
Larry: I leave Friday morning.
Bethany: Then I guess we’re both making choices.

Bethany: I can’t believe this is how you’re leaving it.
Larry: I’m not leaving you. I’m just going without you.
Bethany: That’s not how it feels.
Larry: I know. And I hate that. But I’d hate it more if you came and everything fell apart because of it.
Bethany: You keep talking like I’m fragile.
Larry: No. I’m talking like you matter.
Bethany: Then why does it feel like I’m the easiest one to push aside?
Larry: Because you’re the strongest one in the room. Everyone assumes you’ll land on your feet.
Bethany: Being strong doesn’t mean I don’t get hurt.
Larry: I know. I swear, I know.
(Silence stretches between them.)
Bethany: When you’re in Montana… are you even going to call me?
Larry: If you’ll answer.
Bethany: Don’t say it like that.
Larry: I don’t want you thinking this is goodbye.
Bethany: It already feels like something is ending.
Larry: Or changing.
Bethany: Change still costs something.
Larry: I’ll bring back whatever truth I find. I won’t hide it from you.
Bethany: Just make sure it’s the truth—and not the version that’s easiest to live with.
Larry: That’s fair.
(He picks up his bag, hesitates.)
Larry: For what it’s worth… Jaden didn’t say he was afraid for himself.
Bethany: Then what was he afraid of?
Larry: Losing you.
(Bethany exhales slowly, blinking.)
Bethany: He should’ve told me that.
Larry: He might. When things are quieter.
Bethany: Or when it’s too late.
Larry: I don’t want that.
Bethany: Neither do I.
(Another pause. Softer now.)
Larry: Take care of yourself while I’m gone.
Bethany: Bring yourself back in one piece.
Larry: I’ll try.
(He opens the door, then stops.)
Larry: You were never wrong for wanting to go.
Bethany: And you’re not wrong for leaving.
Larry: That doesn’t make it easier.
Bethany: No. It just makes it honest.
(Larry nods and leaves. Bethany stands alone for a moment, then whispers to the empty room.)
Bethany: Montana better be worth it.
